If you've had "get around to AZ-204" sitting on your to-do list, this is the week to either finish it or let it go. Microsoft confirmed on the official AZ-204 certification page that the exam, the certification, and its renewal assessments all retire on July 31, 2026. That's this Friday. After that, you can't earn it and you can't renew it, full stop.
This isn't an isolated retirement either. It's part of a bigger reshuffle Microsoft kicked off back in March, where seven existing certifications are being phased out in favor of nine new AI-focused ones. AZ-204's replacement is AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure, which leads to the new Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate credential.
What's actually different
AZ-204 was a pretty classic "build things on Azure" exam: compute solutions, storage, security, monitoring, and connecting to Azure and third-party services. AI-200 keeps that developer core but reframes almost everything around AI. Think building and calling AI services, working with vector data, and wiring generative AI features into apps that go to production, not just demo notebooks.
It's the same pattern you're probably noticing across every platform's cert program lately. The fundamentals of "can you build and ship on this cloud" aren't going away, but they're increasingly being tested through an AI lens instead of a generic one. AWS did something similar earlier this year, folding generative AI content into its Cloud Practitioner exam and rolling out a dedicated Generative AI Developer - Professional track. Google Cloud hasn't retired anything comparable yet, but its renewal options are shifting toward Google Skills badges instead of pure retake exams. Every major platform is nudging its certification path in the same direction this year, just at different speeds.
What to actually do about it
If you're already deep into AZ-204 prep and reasonably close to exam-ready, there's a real case for just finishing it this week. Once you pass, the certification itself stays valid through its normal renewal cycle even after the exam retires, so you're not racing a clock that resets in a year. Microsoft still has Exam Replay and the practice assessment live on the AZ-204 page as of this week if you want a final gut check before booking.
If you're earlier in the process, closer to "I've watched a few videos" than "I could pass this tomorrow," it's probably not worth cramming. AI-200 is where the syllabus is heading, and there's no upside in mastering compute-and-storage trivia that won't show up on anything you can actually sit for in a month. Redirect that study time now.
Either way, worth checking your own certification dashboard on Microsoft Learn this week even if AZ-204 isn't on your list. This is one of seven retirements happening as part of the same overhaul, so if you're holding an older Azure credential, there's a decent chance yours is on the list too and you just haven't seen the banner yet.
Practical move: log into Microsoft Learn, pull up your certification history, and look for that same retirement warning banner on anything you're currently holding or working toward. Five minutes now beats finding out in six months that your renewal path quietly disappeared.
