AZ-500 [CRITICAL — retires August 31, 2026]
If you're mid-study for AZ-500 (Microsoft Azure Security Technologies), this is the week that matters. After August 31 you can no longer schedule or sit the exam, and the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification goes with it. If you're exam-ready, book your seat now. Pearson VUE slots fill up fast in the last week before a retirement.
If you're not ready, don't panic-cram. Pivot straight to the replacement.
SC-500 [live now, GA since July 21, 2026]
SC-500, "Implementing End-to-End Security Controls for Cloud and AI Workloads," is the official successor. It leads to a different credential -- Microsoft Certified: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate -- not a renamed AZ-500. 120 minutes, 50-60 questions, $165, passing score 700. You can schedule it now through Pearson VUE.
The content isn't just AZ-500 with new branding. SC-500 folds in AI workload security as a core competency, not an afterthought: prompt injection defense, AI governance, DSPM (data security posture management) for AI systems, and securing Azure OpenAI and Copilot deployments alongside the identity, data, and cloud threat defense material AZ-500 already covered.
Why this matters beyond the exam
This isn't an isolated swap. It's one piece of a much bigger Microsoft certification overhaul rolling through 2026, all pointing the same direction -- security and cloud fundamentals get an "AI" layer bolted on top:
AZ-204 retired July 31 -- replaced by AI-200 (Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate)
AI-900 and AI-102 retired June 30 -- replaced by AI-901 and AI-103
DP-100 retires alongside them -- replaced by AI-300 (Machine Learning Operations Engineer)
If you hold any of these older certs, they don't disappear. They move to your Historical Certifications section on your Learn profile once they expire and stay visible to employers. But you can't earn or renew them past the retirement date.
What to actually do this week
If you're AZ-500 exam-ready: schedule it today. Don't wait until August 30.
If you're not ready and were studying AZ-500 material: stop and switch your study plan to SC-500 now. AZ-500 prep material has essentially zero shelf life after this week.
If you're just starting your Azure security path: skip AZ-500 entirely and start with SC-500 material. No reason to study for a cert that's about to be gone.
If you're eyeing other Azure certs on this list (AI-900, AI-102, DP-100, AZ-204): check your timeline against the retirement dates above before committing study hours.
The pattern across all of these swaps is the same. Microsoft isn't just updating exam content, it's redefining what "cloud security engineer" or "cloud developer" means in an AI-native platform. If you're building a study plan for the second half of 2026, assume any Azure cert you pick up now includes an AI security or AI development component. That's not going away.
