Last week we mentioned Google Cloud was quietly shifting its renewal options toward skill badges instead of straight retake exams. Here's the actual detail, and why it matters right now if you hold a Google Cloud cert that's due for renewal.

Back in late February, Google Cloud moved exam delivery off Kryterion and onto Pearson VUE. There was a short blackout window, no exams could be scheduled between February 23 and March 1, and Pearson VUE scheduling opened February 26 with the first available test date on March 2. The content and format of the exams didn't change, this was purely a delivery-platform swap. But the day-of experience is different: check-in is now handled through AI-driven self-check-in instead of a human greeter, and authentication runs through Pearson's SSO. If you haven't tested with Google Cloud since last winter, don't assume the process looks like it used to.

On top of that, the Associate Cloud Engineer exam got a content refresh on June 30, new English versions of both the standard and renewal exams. Google's framing is "reduced redundancy and improved topic alignment," which in practice means some trimmed, overlapping objectives got cleaned up. If your ACE study guide predates the summer, it's worth double checking it's still current before you sit down for it.

Here's the one to pay attention to. Starting in July, four certifications, Professional Cloud Architect, Professional Data Engineer, Associate Cloud Engineer, and Cloud Digital Leader, picked up a third renewal option alongside the usual retake-the-exam routes: completing designated courses or skill badges through Google Skills instead.

The catch is timing. Only coursework completed in the final year of your certification's active period counts toward this, so you can't bank skill badges early and cash them in later. And if your cert already expired on or after January 1, 2026, or is set to expire anytime through August 31, 2026, Google gave a one-time grace extension pushing your effective deadline to September 1, 2026, specifically so you'd have a shot at using the new path instead of getting forced straight to a retest.

That means if your renewal date falls anywhere in that window, you've got about a month left to decide: knock out the relevant Google Skills badges, or book a retake exam the old way. Waiting past September 1st likely means you're back to the standard exam-only renewal process.

Pull up your certification dashboard on Google Cloud Skills Boost this week and check your actual expiration date. If it falls between January and the end of August this year, you're in the grace window and skill badges are probably the lower-effort path, assuming the specific badges tied to your cert are ones you can realistically finish in the next few weeks. If your renewal isn't due for a while yet, there's no rush, but it's worth knowing this option exists for when it is.

And if you're booking any Google Cloud exam soon, budget a few extra minutes for the new Pearson check-in flow. Nothing to worry about, just don't be caught off guard if it doesn't look like the process you remember.
