Quick one if you're anywhere near the AWS machine learning track. AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate, the current version, MLA-C01, stops being offered in English after September 28. That's next Monday.
We flagged this back in August when the MLA-C02 beta first opened for registration. Registration opened September 1. Beta delivery for the new version actually starts September 29, the day right after MLA-C01 closes. This week is the real cutover.
What's different in MLA-C02
The old exam tested you as a traditional ML engineer: building, training, deploying, and monitoring models on AWS. That core stays put. On top of it, AWS bolted on a real chunk of generative AI content.
Fine-tuning foundation models. Retrieval-augmented generation. Orchestrating agentic workflows instead of single-shot inference calls. Expanded Bedrock coverage. AWS's own framing is blunt about why it. ML engineers today aren't just shipping traditional models anymore, they're operationalizing LLMs and agents too. This exam is catching up to that.
Format-wise it's close to before. 170 minutes, 85 questions, $75, Pearson VUE.
Most teams add a second database for analytics. Then manage sync, lag, and drift forever. TimescaleDB extends Postgres instead. Hypertables, 95% compression, aggregates. No pipeline.
What to actually do
Exam-ready on MLA-C01 right now? Book it this week. September 28 is the literal last day it's offered in English. Don't let it slip to "next month."
Mid-study, not quite ready? Don't panic and don't cram. The traditional ML content, data prep, model training, deployment, monitoring, carries straight into MLA-C02. Think of it as adding a generative AI and agentic layer on top of work you've already put in. Redirect your remaining study time toward Bedrock, RAG design, and agent orchestration specifically, since that's the genuinely new territory.
Haven't started yet? Skip MLA-C01 entirely at this point. There's no reason to learn the structure of an exam that's a week from closing. Wait for MLA-C02 registration to open more broadly (the beta is English-only for now, standard version lands early 2027) and study for the exam you'll actually sit.
One thing worth knowing if you're outside the US: MLA-C01 stays available in Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese through the beta period, so the September 28 cutoff is specifically an English-language deadline. If you're testing in one of those languages, you've got more runway.
Why this one's worth watching beyond AWS
This is the third AWS certification update in about six weeks, after the AI Business Strategist launch and the Solutions Architect Professional and Developer Associate rewrites we covered here recently. Every one of them adds agentic AI and generative AI content to a role that didn't used to require it. If you're on any AWS track right now, pull up the current exam guide yourself before your next study session. A PDF you saved a few months ago is probably already out of date.
